CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Eyes lined up, my hands moved, getting into the best position so I could eviscerate my target without the pesky afternoon sunshine blinding me too much.

My legs were wrapped around Logan’s shoulders, my smile was fierce, and I glared at Henley, as she mimicked my position on her brother Harley.

“You are so small.” I snickered at her, trying to throw her off her game, “You think you can beat me when you are a tiny little baby?”

She scoffed, bringing the ball up high, and smacking it toward me with a laugh.

I reached, aimed high… and missed. The ball slammed down into the pool, splashing me and Logan with its slightly cool specks, two seconds before I fell too.

It was not a graceful fall into the water but I was yanked upright by Logan two seconds later, so I couldn’t complain too much.

He was half naked and holding me tight to his chest… yeah that was worth the loss of our game of volleyball.

“Okay, I concede. You win.” One or two rounds had been enough for me; I had no desire to pull a stitch on my forced rest day.

“We always do.” Harley high-fived his sister before he threw her into the water and she screamed.

He looked just like her, with blonde hair and blue eyes. But he was a little older than me and had such a neat look to him.

His hair was trimmed short, he had glasses on his face, and before he wore trunks to swim he had been sporting a polo shirt and chinos like a pretty little businessman.

Though I supposed he was a businessman, following in his father's footsteps, and he was a dad.

Not in a daddy sort of way, but a legit way with a child and a wife.

“How is Harrison?” I asked as I floated in Logan’s arms, “Georgia said to me at lunch that he was hurting in his tummy or something.”

Harley pulled himself onto the side of the pool, snickering as his sister climbed out and swore at him a few times before she snuck off to steal his beer.

I noticed.

But I let it slide this once because it was a nice day after all and her daddy noticed too and didn’t seem to mind beyond a silent warning for her to only have one.

“Yeah the little guy has been struggling a bit with some food – we think he might have an allergy.” Harley took a sip from a bottle of water his dad threw him, “But mom’s running through the tests this afternoon, so we should find out soon enough what’s causing it.”

I nodded, “Let me know if you need things, I am happy to buy special things: either for you or baby. I know it is weird being not at home anymore and having to stay here for a while, so I am sorry for that interruption.”

It was needed, on account of not wanting to leave them in Diamond Grove with Rocky and the rest of the ridiculous ex-Jackals.
